Beltservice Corporation acquires Rubber and Plastics Inc

Beltservice Corporation (“Beltservice”), a St. Louis -based market leader in value-added fabrication and distribution of conveyor belt and related products, has an agreement to acquire Rubber and Plastics Inc (“RPI”) with a closing set for June 29th.

RPI is an independent distributor and fabricator of conveyor belting with a specialty in rubber cleat vulcanization and hot vulcanized sidewall. Based in Vancouver, WA, RPI has been a trusted supplier for Distributors and OEMS not only in the western United States but throughout the country and Canada for 30 years.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Beltservice, not only are we acquiring a great team of employees with real experience and knowhow in conveyor belt fabrication, we are entering a relationship with Rodney Roalsen to bring his understanding, relationships, and family legacy to Beltservice for future growth,” said Ken Engelsmann, President of Beltservice. “An important part of our growth strategy is finding companies to acquire who believe in a sales channel that supports Distributors and OEMS rather than competes with them. This acquisition is about bringing two great companies who have respectfully competed against each other for many years together to better serve customers.”

The acquisition will strengthen Beltservice’s presence in the western United States where it currently has locations in Portland Oregon, Sacramento California, and Boise Idaho. In the immediate short term, RPI will operate as a division of Beltservice until it can be fully integrated. In the long-term the operations in Portland and Vancouver will be merged into one creating a cleating and sidewall fabrication facility second in the country only to what Beltservice already has in St. Louis.

“I am beyond pleased to be entering this agreement that benefits all the key stakeholders beyond just myself and my family” said Rodney Roalsen, President and Owner of RPI. “Beltservice is a great fit for the employees and customers of RPI at many levels. I am excited about the future and promoting the mutual belief that Beltservice and RPI are Better Together”!

Fenner Dunlop’s Next Generation of Economical Plied Belting- PatriotX

Fenner Dunlop Conveyor Belting has released the next generation Patriot Product line - PatriotX. This innovative, yet economical, conveyor belt is designed to exceed performance expectations for operations that require bulk material handling for their light to medium duty applications, which include aggregate, sand, cement, gravel, pulp and paper operations. The PatriotX carcass is available in 200, 275, and 350 PIW ratings, compared to the first generation Patriot which was configured in 220 and 330 PIW ratings. This next generation belting, is already attracting attention in the market. Since the product launch in late 2017, Fenner Dunlop has not only received positive feedback from within our Distribution network, but has also won several orders for the new product in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

What makes the PatriotX so unique? The design of the PatriotX incorporates a patented single unit carcass construction with dual crimp warp. The design provides excellent resistance to rips, tears, impacts and punctures using a technologically advanced and patented belt fabric design compared to other economical belt offerings. The unique fabric weave allows for improved mechanical fastener retention efficiency and ultimate dynamic splice life over conventional single and multi-plied conveyor belting products. This improved performance is exhibited across all fastener types including plate, rivet and loop staple designs. The lower gauge of the PatriotX carcass compared to similar tension rated multi-plied fabric belting allows for smaller diameter pulleys throughout the conveyor system as well as superior troughability, tracking and load support. The fabric construction and treatment process result in enhanced resistance to edge ravel, moisture, and mildew. In addition, the unique fabric design allows for superior fabric adhesions for both wet and dry applications. The PatriotX also has a safety rating greater than 8:1 and is finger splice compatible. PatriotX allows our customers an alternative to import and low cost domestic belt. All of these unique design elements of the PatriotX help to avoid costly repairs, downtime and potentially detrimental damage to an operation’s conveyor system. Along with the improved design of the PatriotX belting, comes an improved method of splicing. The Next Generation of Patriot uses a new and innovative finger splice design that optimizes performance and reduces vulcanizing time. No other belt splicing process in the market compares to this new and innovative technique.

If you are interested in learning more about the new PatriotX product line, please visit the FDA website, YouTube channel, Facebook Page or Twitter page. Here you will find links to the PatriotX product videos. You can also contact a member of our customer service team directly at 1-800-661-2358.

A Final Message From Vernon Smith, Outgoing President

The final article is always the hardest to write. There are too many people to list individually who I need to thank.

First, the task force who helped seek out AMPED. Next, the joint summit task force who over 3 years help put together a successful joint convention.

To the Board of Directors, whose support throughout the year made our decisions easier.

The committee chairs and committee volunteers, the heart of NIBA, who kept NIBA moving forward in spite of the distractions.

To the executive committee, who devote a lot of their personal time and energy to make NIBA a better organization.

To the past presidents, whose unsolicited support will always be appreciated.

I sincerely thank all of you. I’m honored to say that I was President of an organization with a membership of integrity and professionalism that NIBA has.

The ability of NIBA to bring together business competitors, business associates, individuals with different personal believes and have everyone working towards the common goal of continually advancing NIBA into a better organization is truly exceptional.

NIBA, with Bill Hornsby’s leadership and an excellent team around him, along with AMPED, will quickly rise to a new level. There is a lot of BLUE SKY on the horizon for NIBA.

Thank you for the privilege to serve as your 2017 president. I’m excited about the future of NIBA and look forward to seeing all of you again in Phoenix. Please keep in touch.

Sincerely,
Vernon Smith
President of NIBA, 2017

Flexco hosted 30 attendees for Lightweight Training in Grand Rapids, Michigan

NIBA’s Key Principles and Best Practices of Lightweight Belting was hosted by Flexco - Grand Rapids, Oct. 10-11, and attended by more than 30 sales reps, technicians, and customer service reps from belting companies across the U.S., as well as Canada and Mexico.

Trainers Beth Miller (Flexco), Steve Fournier (Apache), and Tom Archer (Vaughn Belting Co) presented four training modules, including hands-on demonstrations and tangible examples of the following topics:

  • Basic Properties of Conveyor Belts
  • Splicing, Custom Fabrications
  • Conveyor Design, Trouble Shooting
  • Industries and Applications

A site visit to nearby Uniband gave attendees the full, step-by-step demonstration of belt manufacturing, from start to finish.

The training provided a well-rounded learning experience for all members of the diverse group of attendees.

Track Train and Troubleshoot – Heavyweight Training held in Richmond, Virginia

Understanding conveyor operation is more than “seeing” a problem. What causes the outcome? How did it get started? What action steps are necessary to maximize belt life? NIBA’s most recent offering of 3T tackled these questions and more for two days in October at the Four Points by Sheraton, Richmond Airport. A full house of over 30 persons interacted to divulge industry standards on belt construction, operational forces, rated versus operating PIW, tracking, transition distances and much more. The level of interaction coupled with the wide variety of experience offered up comments and questions from all points of view. We even benefited through the contributions from an international member from Turkey. And, as always, two seats were reserved for active miners from the host quarry. In this case, Luck Stone, South Richmond Plant, provided the real world opportunity to contrast the established standards. The event concluded with a lively discussion on the contrast between the two.

There are several key components to making an event such as Track Train and Troubleshoot a success. Strong content is important. Having the flawless efforts of our new management group allows it to move seamlessly and is a huge benefit. However, the support of NIBA members truly is the key to the longevity of this event. This years’ offering was supported by Belt Service; GRT Rubber; Virginia Carolina Belting; All-State Belting; RGA; Applied Industrial Technologies; Rubber and Accessories; Ayik Band, LTD; Reichel-Korfmann; R/W Connection; and ASGCO. Without member participation, success would be non-existent. On behalf of Mike Cremeens, Dick McConnell, Gary Deck, Dell Gutknecht and the Education and Technical Committee, we extend our appreciation for your continued support.
